After a 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stage marked Arsenal’s inability to snag a win early this year, a solid 3-0 victory over Aston Villa has appeared to restore the quality of the Gunners to what fans have come to know.
With the win, Arsenal has jumped into fourth place in the PL standings, while the offensive assault of the game itself has put certain players into the spotlight: Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck.
Welbeck signed with Manchester United on a long-term deal, arriving at the Emirates for around $26 million just before the end of the transfer window, and display his capacity to act as a offensive threat, alongside Ozil, who had been struggling to find his form in recent contests.
Both players combined to score within minutes of each other, the former Real Madrid star converted in the 32nd minute off Welbeck’s through ball, while the Englishman took Ozil’s cross to finish another goal in the 34th minute.
Manager Arsene Wenger shared his insight regarding his two key players’ performances in this fixture.
“I thought it had come to the point where we needed to show our confidence in him,” Wenger said, per The Guardian. “So I never really thought about dropping him, we rested Alexis Sánchez instead because he has played a lot of games. We adapted the system slightly to play Özil in the middle and he responded very well. He prefers playing in the middle but I can find you about 10 other players in my squad who would say the same. It was not just his performance, the whole team played very well. It was the response we needed after Tuesday.”
