It was a rough weekend for Americans in England, but elsewhere things look up.
Tim Howard struggled again in Premier League play as Everton fell 3-2 to Crystal Palace despite looking the better side for much of the match.
Across the country, Howard’s potential replacement with the national team Brad Guzan also tasted defeat, falling 3-0 to Arsenal as Mesut Ozil dominated the pitch at Villa Park. Everton has just five points in five matches, much less than the club would expect to have by now.
Jozy Altidore‘s struggles at Sunderland continue. The American striker came off the bench and picked up 23 minutes but he was powerless to help his club as they drew with newly-promoted Burnley 0-0, and are still without a win.
Fulham’s midfield maestro Emerson Hyndman was an unused substitute for interim manager Kit Symons’ first match after Felix Magath was fired. The club fell to 10 men after defender Shaun Hutchinson was sent off, and Blackburn came away with a 1-0 victory.
Hyndman’s benching was surprising given he’s been quite good this season – one of the few bright spots at Fulham so far – and he played for Symons in the Fulham youth system. The Cottagers have just one point in eight matches and sit bottom of the Championship.
Nottingham Forest still sit atop the Championship, but they slumped to a 0-0 draw at Millwall as Eric Lichaj started and played the full 90 minutes.
Bolton fell to a surging Wolverhampton side 1-0 as Tim Ream played all 90 minutes, and Zak Whitbread did as well in Derby’s 2-2 draw with Cardiff City.
Julian Green, on loan at Hamburg, pulled off the shock of the Bundesliga season so far as HSV held his parent club Bayern Munich 0-0 for a massive point. Green was a 76th-minute substitute and played 14 crucial minutes as Bayern swarmed late looking for a winner. The point is just Hamburg’s second of the year, and Bayern remains in a four-way tie for the top spot in Germany.
Bundesliga success found Timmy Chandler as well, as he earned his first start for his hometown club Eintracht Frankfurt and held Schalke 2-2 to pull even on points with Wolfsburg in the table.
John Anthony Brooks went 90 minutes and picked up a yellow card in a 2-2 draw with Freiburg, while Fabian Johnson‘s Borussia Monchengladbach finished scoreless with Koln.
In France, Alejandro Bedoya was not in the squad for Nantes’ 2-1 win over Nice due to a stomach virus.
Over to Norway, Bob Bradley’s Stabaek was rocked by three second half goals for Aalesund in a 3-0 defeat, while Mix Diskerud and Rosenborg fell 2-1 to Haugesund as the American played all 90. The pair of losses drops Rosenborg to third in the Tippeligaen, while Stabaek has faded into ninth.
Sascha Kljestan didn’t play in a 3-2 win for Anderlecht over Cercle Brugge.
