League Cup: Premier League giants on upset alert

Seven more Premier League teams are in midweek League Cup action on Wednesday, as the third round of the knockout competition continues.

Potentially banana skins lie ahead for defending champions Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur who all host upstart Championship teams from England’s second-tier.

On Tuesday Arsenal crashed out of the League Cup as they lost 2-1 to Southampton at the Emirates, while Swansea beat Everton and Stoke beat Sunderland in the two other all-Premier League clashes. Elsewhere on Tuesday, Liverpool defeated Championship side Middlesbrough 14-13 on penalty kicks after a nervy match at Anfield. With a place in the last 16 of the competition on the line, Man City, Chelsea and Spurs will look to negotiate tricky matches but also give minutes to their squad players as European games and top of the table clashes begin to mount up.

City host Sheffield Wednesday as Manuel Pellegrini’s men look to defend their League Cup crown, while Chelsea host Bolton and Tottenham welcome high-flying Forest to White Hart Lane as the Midlands club are top of the second-tier and look most likely to spring the upset. The League Cup is low on the list of priorities for many of the PL’s big boys but they will want to avoid crashing out to lower-league opposition.

Below is a full list of Wednesday’s fixtures, which begin at 2:45 p.m. ET unless otherwise stated, as the fourth round draw for the League Cup will take place upon their conclusion.
