After a record amount of spending in the summer transfer window, Louis van Gaal isn’t done strengthening Manchester United. Not at all.
United are already being linked with a number of moves in January, the latest being Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi, who has also been interesting Manchester City and Chelsea.

The center back, 26, joined Valencia from FC Porto last February for $16 million and was loaned to Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro over the summer. Argentine international Otamendi has since returned to Valencia and become an integral part of the La Liga sides defense.
Talking about defense, United are still in desperate need of reinforcements at the back as LVG’s squad is looking decidely top-heavy after a summer which saw Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao arrive to bolster an attack which already has Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata. United have struggled in central defense as Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have all struggled so far and new signing Marcos Rojo has been deployed at left back due to Luke Shaw’s injury. They have given up five goals against Leicester City, four against the MK Dons and need defensive reinforcements.
Otamendi could be the man for van Gaal, but with a huge price tag on his head, the Red Devils could once again be taken to the cleaners as $65 million seems pretty high for a player who cost $16 million last year.
That said, no matter the price, United need more defenders. Rumors linked them with former center back and current FC Barcelona man Gerard Pique and between now and January the rumor mill will be spinning into overdrive as United’s heavy spending continues.
