Report: Liverpool renew interest in Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, $65 million the fee

After losing Luis Suarez over the summer, Liverpool were repeatedly linked with a move for Karim Benzema.

In the end Brendan Rodgers plumped for Mario Balotelli, the cheaper and slightly riskier option, and so far Balotelli has failed to get going at Anfield.

According to reports from Spain Benzema is currently unhappy at Real despite only signing a new long-term contract in August, with Liverpool on red alert to make a $65 million bid for the French international striker in January.

After the arrival of James Rodriguez and Javier Hernandez over the summer at Real Madrid, Benzema is said to be unhappy at the amount of strikers he will have to split minutes with, as Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale are both around too. Talk about a log jam.

Benzema has scored 113 goals in 243 games for Real, and shone for France at the 2014 World Cup by scoring three goals in the group stages. If Benzema did arrive at Anfield from Real (where he’s been since 2009 after leaving Lyon) the powerful striker would be a huge upgrade on Liverpool’s current attacking talents and could compliment Daniel Sturridge superbly. His strength and pace would suit the Premier League and the French striker may fancy a fresh start and the chance to be the main man elsewhere.

Arsenal are also reportedly sniffing around Benzema, as Real could be looking to move him on if he’s unhappy as they certainly aren’t short of options up top. With Liverpool’s lightning-quick winger Raheem Sterling recently linked with Real, maybe some kind of player swap deal can be arranger plus cash?
