Premier League preview: Stoke City vs. Newcastle

  • Stoke have won 3 of the last 4 PL home games vs. Newcastle
  • The Potters have lost both their home games this season
  • Newcastle have not won in the PL so far in 2014-15
  • On Monday Stoke City host Newcastle United (Watch live on NBCSN, 3 p.m. ET and online via Live Extra) to the Britannia Stadium in what promises to be a physical battle in the Potteries.

Newcastle are still searching for their first win of the season as manager Alan Pardew continues to be put under pressure. As for Stoke, they have made a solid yet unspectacular start to the season with five points from their opening five games. This will be a tough battle as Newcastle aim to build on their 2-2 draw against Hull last weekend after a rousing late comeback courtesy of Papiss Cisse’s late double, while Stoke also drew 2-2 away at QPR.

In team news Stoke will give a late fitness test to Jonathan Waters, while Stephen Ireland could make his PL return. Newcastle are likely to start with Cisse after he came off the bench to score twice last weekend.

    What they’re saying

Mark Hughes on Stoke’s home form – “I can understand people are concerned because we have yet to get our first point at home but it’s a worry that will go away very, very soon – I’m convinced of that. We are having to be patient at home. We knew teams would approach games at the Britannia Stadium slightly differently by shutting up shop somewhat and giving us the respect that our showing last season deserves.”

Pardew on visiting Stoke – “It’s always tough to go there. We got beat there last year, it was a tough day for us and we are looking for a better showing than we did that day. The home form is something Stoke will look to correct but really both of us are fighting but for different causes.

This game will be a very tight match under the floodlights at the Brit. Newcastle will be tight and compact and Stoke will be direct and try to get the ball wide and then in the box as early as possible. Bojan could be the difference in this match, but I’m going for a draw.
