UEFA Champions League roundup: PSG beat Barcelona, Chelsea top Sporting

On Tuesday eight games played out in the second matchday of the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League group stages, as plenty of big teams were in action.

Barcelona lost for the first time this season as Paris Saint-Germain beat them in the French capital, while Premier League leaders Chelsea won away in Lisbon to top Group G.

Elsewhere Man City and Roma battled it out in a 1-1 draw plus plenty more gripping action occurred across Europe.

GROUP E

Manchester City 1-1 AS Roma – Full recap

An early penalty from Sergio Aguero gave City the lead but Francesco Totti equalized after 23 minutes (becoming the oldest player to score in UCL history) in a tight game at the Etihad which ended level. City now have just one point in Group E, while Roma are second with four and Bayern Munich are top with six points.

CSKA Moscow 0-1 Bayern Munich – Full recap

Thomas Muller’s 22nd minute penalty kick was enough to give Bayern their second-straight 1-0 win to open up UCL play as they sit top of Group E above Roma and Man City.

GROUP F

Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 Barcelona

PSG handed Barcelona their first defeat this season as David Luiz, Marco Verratti and Blaise Matuidi sent the Parc des Princes into a frenzy. Lionel Messi and Neymar got the goals for Barca in what turned out to be a real cracker in the French capital. PSG are top of Group F with four points from their opening two games, while Barca are second with three points.

APOEL 1-1 Ajax

The visitors took the lead through Andersen but shortly after Manduca equalized to make it 1-1 at the break and that’s how things finished up. Ajax and APOEL still the underdogs in Group F but they are alive and well.

GROUP G

Sporting Lisbon 0-1 Chelsea – RECAP

Chelsea won away 1-0 in the Portuguese capital against Sporting Lisbon as former Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic scored a fine header at the back post from Cesc Fabregas’ seventh assist of the season. Mourinho’s men could have won by more in a rambunctious affair which saw Courtois made a couple of nice saves, including one from Algerian forward Islam Slimani. Chelsea are top of Group G.

Schalke 1-1 Maribor

The Slovenian minnows went ahead away in Gelsenkirchen after Bohar gave them the lead in the first half but Schalke’s skipper Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored the equalizer. Both clubs have now drawn their two opening games 1-1 and sit behind Chelsea in Group G.

GROUP H

BATE 2-1 Athletic Bilbao

Polyakov and Karnitski put BATE 2-0 up but Bilbao struck back right on half time through Aduriz to set the second half up perfectly. The Spaniards couldn’t grab an equalizer and as BATE held on for a crucial win to put them second in Group H.

Shakhtar Donetsk 2-2 Porto

A flurry of second half goals saw a 2-2 tie play out in Ukraine as Teixeira gave Shakhtar the lead, which was doubled by Luiz Adriano with five minutes to go. Job done, right? Oh no. FC Porto scored twice in the last two minutes as Jackson Martinez was the hero for the Portuguese side who remain top of Group H.
