Galatasaray fans light up Emirates Stadium with flares in Arsenal match

Take in a top-flight football match anywhere in Turkey and you’ll be hard-pressed not to see at least a few flares among the fans.

No big deal.

But in England, well… that’s a different story as fans are hardly allowed to stand during the run of play let alone set off pyrotechnics. Safety, obviously, is the main concern and security at Premier League stadiums takes it very, very seriously.

So when Galatasaray went down 2-0 to Arsenal in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash it was a bit surprising to see one corner of the pitch light up orange. Presumably, the Turks were not happy with their side’s performance and with good reason as the defense was awful.

The flares were unleashed among the Turkish fans themselves and then thrown onto the pitch, a handful or so causing a brief halt in play. Wesley Sneijder, ever the humanitarian, sauntered over to the fans and graciously asked them to calm down, which, to their credit, they did.

I’ve always believed and continue to believe that Turkish fans may very well be the best in the sport. Their passion is undeniable, if not slightly psychotic. One things for sure, the scene made for some captivating photos.
