The Houston Dynamo lead the Chicago Fire 1-0 at halftime in a consolation match for two teams eliminated from playoff contention.
Omar Cummings put Houston ahead in the 18th minute after heading on a corner from Brad Davis. Davis served a near-post ball that met the head of the Jamaican striker, who neatly deflected the cross low and to the far post.
The Dynamo could have been ahead by two when AJ Cochran connected on another strong header, only to be denied by a sprawling Sean Johnson. Johnson was busy in net for Chicago as the Dynamo fired eight shots on goal, compared to the Fire’s one.
The pitch at Toyota Park seems to be in poor condition, with chunks of turf coming up as players cut and change directions. That could be dangerous in the second half as 15 fouls were called in a chippy first.
