The keeper was 27 years old.

Meyiwa had captained his Orlando Pirates side to a 4-1 win over Ajax Cape Town last night in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League.

The Orlando Pirates released a statement via the club’s official website:

The Orlando Pirates Football Club family has learned with sadness about the untimely death of our number one goalkeeper and current captain Senzo Meyiwa.

“This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it – to Senzo’s family , his extended family, Orlando Pirates and to the nation”, commented the chairman Dr Irvin Khoza.

This statement is being issued whilst Orlando Pirates officials are up and about dealing with matters that arise when such untimely and unsettling news is received.

The club will be holding a press conference on Monday morning.

Reports state two men entered Meyiwa’s house where an altercation ensued. Meyiwa was shot during the altercation and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
