Americans abroad: Good news for US international at Sunderland (No, not that one)

It hasn’t been a productive on-field time for Jozy Altidore since his movd to Sunderland, but one of the more exciting American prospects overseas has received another high-five from the club.

Sunderland has inked 18-year-old US U-20 attacker Lynden Gooch to a three-year deal to keep him at the Stadium of Light through 2017.

Though the youngster hasn’t made the Premier League stage for the Black Cats, he has produced highlight reel material for their youth teams, including the Sunderland U-21 side (For some GIFs of his strike work, go to Brian Sciaretta’s American Soccer Now post from the Spring).

The Sunderland site points out that Gooch holds a British passport, but the midfielder is currently doing work for Tab Ramos’ U-20 team in Spain. That midfield unit is one of the States strengths moving forward, with Fulham’s Emerson Hyndman and Borussia Dortmund’s Junior Flores in the mix.
