Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has heaped praise upon Wayne Rooney ahead of his side’s Saturday clash with fellow top-four aspirers Arsenal (Watch live on NBC and online via Live Extra, 12:30 pm ET), while reminding everyone that Rooney isn’t your “typical” attacking player.

“I think Rooney is not a typical striker, and because of that I’m not always using him as a striker,” the Dutch manager said (full comments above). “That’s then remarkable when you score so much, but that’s also extra quality (in the team.) You can use Rooney in different positions, so for a manager he’s a fantastic player.”

van Gaal also spoke of his admiration for the way Arsenal have long played under manager Arsene Wenger, saying “It’s an attacking way of playing football, and you play football for the fans. I think that’s very nice.”

The comments of Wenger — which can be heard below, in full — highlighted all the good the recent international break did his team following a 2-1 defeat to Swansea City two weeks ago; a perceived “mental block” for his side against United, and the difference between games played at Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium; as well as possible changes to his starting 11 on Saturday.
