To be honest, it wasn’t even as close as the 3-0 score line.
Manchester United thoroughly outplayed Hull City in a showing of what could be to come under Louis van Gaal, and carried more than a hint of United’s past Old Trafford dominance.
Playing a three-man back line of Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Michael Carrick, United limited the Tigers to just four shots and didn’t concede a single corner kick.

And that’s not even mentioning the attack. The Red Devils enjoyed 77 percent of possession and teased the Tigers with passing. Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie followed Chris Smalling’s goal-decision-system-aided opener with goals, and his goal was the only thing that needed anything more than the eye test.
Van Gaal was thrilled:
“It was the best match of our season. What pleased me most was the way we dominated the game from the first minute to the last minute.
“We created many chances, we didn’t give away many chances and we kept a clean sheet again.”

Smalling agreed with van Gaal, “The manager has said it was our best game of the season and I think it was. It was a complete performance.”
United are in fourth place despite a bevy of injuries and almost zero depth in the back. If LVG can add a star and some depth in the back, it’d be hard to rule out the Red Devils being a threat for any honor if not for Chelsea’s absurd start.
Old Trafford faithful, do you believe?
