Embattled Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has landed himself in hot water after posting a racial picture on Instagram that could prod the FA into disciplinary action.
Balotelli, often the butt of many racial attacks himself, posted a picture of the famous video game character Mario along with a caption that seems to have good intentions but may have taken things too far.
The picture reads “Don’t be racist. Be like Mario. He’s an Italian plumber, created by Japanese people, who speaks English and looks like a Mexican.”
It then goes on to, in what looks like a portion of the picture someone else added later, reveal the more controversial statements.
You can see the Instagram post, which was later deleted, here:
The FA confirmed it was looking into the situation, while Liverpool responded publicly, saying via a club spokesperson, “We are aware of the posting which has since been promptly deleted by the player. We will be speaking to the player about the issue.”
Balotelli later responded to criticism on Twitter, saying:
The situation is an unfortunate one for Balotelli because for his entire career he’s been flooded with racial attacks on social media and during matches, with fans of both his team and rival teams chiming in. He’s consistently been one of the most often targeted for such insults.
Hopefully Balotelli learns from this that, ultimately, it’s probably better for someone of his publicity to just shy away from anything even remotely controversial.
