It’s been a tough season for Emmanuel Adebayor.
After struggling early in the season, the striker called out Tottenham fans, saying the club needed more support at White Hart Lane.
Now with his starting role for Spurs in the hands of the young Harry Kane, Adebayor has left the team to return to his native Togo to deal with what the club has called “personal reasons.”
In a statement from Tottenham’s official website, the club gives little detail on Adebayor’s leave of absence.
We can confirm that Emmanuel Adebayor has been given permission to return home for personal reasons. This is a private matter and so we will not be providing any further comment.
Adebayor was in Turkey with the club ahead of their Europa League match against Besiktas, before leaving to return to Togo. However, he was doubtful to feature in Mauricio Pochettino’s side due to fitness issues.
The 30-year-old striker has only scored twice in twelve appearances in all competitions for Spurs this season. With the emergence of Harry Kane as a consistent goalscorer for the club, Adebayor hasn’t seen the pitch since before the November international break.
Despite the club’s announcement that Adebayor has left for personal reasons, his absence will surely lead to more rumors of a possible departure from White Hart Lane come January. With his struggles to find his form, and now playing time, some have suggested a move for Adebayor during the transfer window, although manager Mauricio Pochettino says the club has no plans to sell the striker.
