Angry. Hurt. Devastated.

Southampton skipper Jose Fonte looked all that and more in the above interview, as he spoke about Saints’ embarrassing 1-0 defeat away at third-tier Sheffied United on Tuesday.

Playing the lowest ranked team left in the competition, Southampton currently sit in fifth-place in the Premier League and were dead certs to make the League Cup semifinal.

But a lackluster display away in Sheffield on a cold and wet Tuesday night, despite being roared on by over 4,000 away fans who made the arduous five-hour journey from the South Coast of England, brought these harsh words from Southampton’s captain.

“It is not acceptable. First of all I want to apologize to the fans. They don’t deserve this. This is not us,” Fonte said. “Even the last games that we have lost, we showed that we were better than the other teams and we had opportunities to win and we deserved more from those games than what we have. But tonight… I am disappointed. Obviously. I am frustrated, I am angry because we’ve had a great opportunity to go into the semifinals and do something special and we just blew it. Everyone needs to take responsibility. Stand up, be counted and don’t hide in their shells because Saturday is another game in the Premier League and we need to stop this bad run.”

Strong words indeed from the Portuguese international, as Saints have now lost five games on the spin and their good early season form is evaporating. Talk of a top four challenge this season now seems a little off the mark after they have lost to Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Burnley in their last four PL games and they have now been embarrassed by League One side Sheffield United in the Capital One Cup.

Injuries, suspensions and a severe lack of belief and form have hit the Saints at a crucial stage of the season.
