The United States women’s national team picked up the big win they needed on Thursday, even though a big picture item remains unchecked on their list.
The States cruised to a 7-0 win over Argentina in its final group game of the International Tournament of Brasilia, and got the help they needed from in-form Brazil to qualify for the title game.
[ USWNT: Tough draw for 2015 World Cup ]
Three days after Brazil played the villains in a 3-2 win over the US, Marta and company led the Brazilian team to a 4-1 win over China, ensuring a rematch of Monday’s game for the tournament final on Sunday.
But it wasn’t all good news for a USWNT that will finish a calendar year in a position other than No. 1 in the FIFA rankings for the first time in more than half a decade.
Germany is the new No. 1 in FIFA women’s world rankings. #USWNT had held position since March 2008. USA now No. 2.

Germany went unbeaten and untied in World Cup qualification (10-0) and has only one loss on its recent resume (an October friendly vs France).
That said, Monday’s loss to Brazil was the USWNT’s first in any competition since March. The US did draw and beat France back in July, but will feel further aggrieved to be No. 2 if they beat Brazil on Sunday (though a second-straight tourney title would be quite the consolation). FIFA rankings… what a riot!
