Newcastle United 3-3 Burnley: Clarets come back thrice to snare point

Newcastle’s first match in the post-Alan Pardew era was an up-and-down affair, as the Magpies lead 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 en route to a 3-3 draw against plucky Burnley.

Third-string Magpies keeper Jak Alnwick was victimized for three goals, with George Boyd and Danny Ings complementing a Paul Dummett own goal for Burnley. The Clarets remain in the relegation zone.

Steven Taylor, Jack Colback and Moussa Sissoko scored for Newcastle, which remains in 10th place. Assistants John Carver and Steve Stone watched over the proceedings in place of Pardew.

Burnley was forced to use all its subs due to injury by the 37th minute.

After two corner kicks in the first several minutes, Emmanuel Riviere flashed a close-range header just over the net, and Burnley was firmly on the back foot.

And Newcastle went up after just 15 minutes when Taylor rose to head Jack Colback’s cross past Heaton.

A horrible Paul Dummett own goal put the game back on level terms, as the Newcastle defender went to head the ball to keeper Jak Alnwick and instead popped it over the netminder.

Then Colback bailed Dummett out by one-touching a layoff from Daryl Janmaat past Heaton with tremendous pace from 20 yards.

Burnley came very close to tying the score in the game’s 49th minute, putting a shot and rebound off either post in an unlucky bit of offense.

The Clarets controlled the first 20 minutes of the second half, and Ings used a quaint header to fool Dummett and beat an out-of-position Alnwick and tie the match at 2.

Despite looking shaky for most of the half, Sissoko put the hosts back up after a gorgeous play near the end line. Ayoze Perez started it with a cutback move to set up Adam Armstrong, and the 17-year-old side-footed a volley pass that Sissoko belted through traffic for the game’s fifth goal.

Boyd found the deserved equalizer in the 86th minute, victimizing an again out-of-position Alnwick.
