The first and most important thing to note about this latest silly season post is that Roberto Mancini was certainly not going to respond to a question about Yaya Toure by saying he’s not interested and that the player is rubbish.
But there’s something in the Inter Milan boss’ answer that, coupled with Yaya’s apparent summer of discontent at Manchester City, makes you wonder whether the 31-year-old midfielder could skip England at some point.
I mean, scroll through our Yaya Toure tags and you’ll find a litany of comments like “I’ll retire at Barca” and “PSG is awesome”. Not to mention the birthday fiasco.
And knowing that Mancini knows Yaya well, we’ll present the comments in case something comes up.
When asked about the prospect of making a move for Toure, who he managed at the Etihad Stadium, the manager refused to rule out a reunion with the midfielder.
“Inter have more appeal than many teams,” he said on Saturday. “I had Yaya at Manchester City and I rate him as one of the best players in the world. We’ll see what happens in the future, but he belongs to Manchester City.”
Toure, 31, was tipped to leave City last summer and recently acknowledged interest in a future move to Paris Saint-Germain.
There would be a remarkable amount of interest for Yaya should he want to leave City and, while Serie A isn’t knowing for doling out big big dough to players, remember that Inter was among the Top 20 biggest-earning clubs in the world last season.
It’s probably nothing, but it is worth noting, especially as Inter hopes to become relevant again on the international stage.
