League Cup semifinals: Chelsea, Liverpool level; Spurs take slender lead to Sheffield

On Tuesday and Wednesday the second legs of the League Cup semifinals take place and both are evenly poised.

Chelsea and Liverpool meet at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday with the scores locked at 1-1 after the first leg, while Tottenham Hotspur take a slender 1-0 advantage to League One Sheffield United as they aim to avoid a massive upset on Wednesday and book a spot in the final at Wembley on March 1.

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool showed plenty of promise in the first leg but could only snatch a draw as Chelsea grabbed a vital away goal with Eden Hazard’s early penalty kick. If Raheem Sterling can get running at the Blues’ defense early on then the west London club could be in a spot of bother after their shocking FA Cup exit against Bradford City on Saturday and before their huge title-showdown with Manchester City on Saturday.

Rodgers has never beaten his old mentor Mourinho in four attempts, if Liverpool are to advance he needs a win or a high-scoring draw at the Bridge.

League One Sheffield United continued their incredible run in the cup competitions as last year’s FA Cup semifinalists acquitted themselves superbly at White Hart Lane in the first leg. Only Andros Townsend’s penalty kick separates the teams as the third-tier club pushed Spurs all the way. Can a lively atmosphere at a sold out Bramall Lane inspire the Blades to victory and reach a major cup final?
