Louis van Gaal: No Carrick for month, no new signings, Fletcher is at West Ham

Louis van Gaal’s Friday press conference was jam-packed with Manchester United news, from what’s coming to who’s going and who will be missing for a while.

On incoming transfers:

“Every day I read that I am interested in players. I am not interested in players, only selling.”

The takeaway: Until Monday, when United is offered a player they like for $xxxxx million. Kidding aside, could Manchester United really move through January without adding a defender?

On third captain Darren Fletcher:

“‘He is now in West Ham, I believe. We have to wait and see. He is my third captain, an important guy in the dressing room. I like him as a human being. But he has not played so much.”

The takeaway: Liking someone’s humanity is different than needing them past this summer, and Fletcher leaving town is another one-club, Manchester United-raised man out the door.

Van Gaal also revealed that a ruptured muscle is going to keep Michael Carrick out of the lineup for four weeks. This, coupled with Fletcher’s presumed departure — he’s getting a medical at the Boleyn Ground today — is going to highlight players like Daley Blind, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera as the season moves along.

United hosts Leicester City at 10am ET on Saturday.
