With DR Congo and Equatorial Guinea already into the semifinals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana and Ivory Coast filled up the bracket as the neighboring West African sides punched their ticket to the final four today.
Ghana 3-0 Guinea
It was all Ghana today as Everton’s Christian Atsu tallied twice to lead the Black Stars to a 3-0 win over Guinea. Atsu, who is on loan to Everton from Chelsea, opened the scoring in the fourth minute and added another just after the hour mark, the second a stunning strike that found the top corner from distance.
Kwesi Appiah also scored for Ghana, a Crystal Palace striker currently on loan at League Two side Cambridge United, the same side that shocked Manchester United with a scoreless draw in the FA Cup.
Ivory Coast 3-1 Algeria
A Premier League striker made the difference once again as Wilfried Bony’s brace helped Ivory Coast earn a massive win over Algeria, one of the favorites to take home the title. The striker scored both goals with his head, first finishing a cross from Max Gradel, and the second finding the end of a Yaya Toure free-kick, a connection Manchester City fans will be hoping continues back in England. Down 2-1, Algeria pushed forward in search of an equalizer only to have Roma’s Gervinho score a late insurance goal for the Elephants.
In the semifinals, Ivory Coast will look to put an end to DR Congo’s underdog run, as Ghana faces hosts Equatorial Guinea in the other matchup. A dream final of Ivory Coast vs. Ghana is possible, but then again, there’s no place known for upsets more than the Africa Cup of Nations.
