Bayern Munich were unable to beat Shakhtar Donetsk in a tense encounter filled with fouls, while Chelsea was fortunate to avoid a loss in France.

All that and more in our Champions League roundup:

Shakhtar Donetsk 0-0 Bayern MunichRECAP

The Ukrainian side has an unlikely advantage after 90 minutes of their tie with the German powers, as a Xabi Alonso red card in the 65th minute allowed the hosts to try for an astonishing first leg lead. They didn’t get it, but Shakhtar fans will be dreaming of the quarterfinals with the knowledge that a road goal can go a long way on March 11 in Munich.

Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 ChelseaRECAP

Injuries, what of them? PSG looked quite dangerous for much of the second half, but never found the go-ahead goal after Edinson Cavani canceled out the lead provided by Branislav Ivanovic’s 36th minute opener. The first half was quite even, and perhaps more of what we’ll see in the second leg on March 11 at Stamford Bridge.
