Jonas Gutierrez makes his long-anticipated return to Newcastle United’s Premier League squad for this weekend’s match against Aston Villa at St. James Park.
Manager John Carver confirmed the news during his Thursday press conference.
His appearance on the pitch at St. James Park would be one of the highlights of the weekend after the midfielder, 31, revealed a year-long battle with testicular cancer in August.
Jonas had missed much of last season for the Magpies and was loaned to former manager Chris Hughton at Norwich City for the second-half of the season.
There has been some question as to whether the player’s exclusion from the squad was due to contract rather than fitness; The speculation is that Jonas’ participation in the team for a certain number of matches triggers another year on his contract.
Gone for now is the trademark ponytail due to the cancer battle, but Jonas’ spirit has been and will be a big boost for the Magpies.
Newcastle was smoked by Manchester City on Saturday to the tune of 5-0 at the Etihad.
“I let the players suffer on Monday a little, but everyone is in good spirits now and Saturday is an opportunity to put it right,” Carver said.
