John Carver: Only the result mattered in Newcastle United’s victory over Aston Villa


The performance matters. Losing while playing well and “deserving” more from the game is very much a thing, and a very frequent occurrence. There are positives to be taken from a good performance when the result so happens to go against you. Such is almost always the case.

Unless you’ve won just once in seven league games and twice in 11, as Newcastle United had before Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Aston Villa. Then, you’re likely to take any kind of victory, no matter how hopeless the side looks in arriving at the destination. The result, as interim Newcastle manager John Carver said following the game (above video), is all that matters.

“I said that before the game to the guys in there. … We knew what type of game it was going to be. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a nice feeling getting that goal just before halftime. … Getting that goal just before halftime was a godsend.”
