Wayne Rooney had gone eight matches without scoring, tied for the longest drought in his career at Old Trafford. On Saturday, the Manchester United captain made sure that tally didn’t reach nine as he scored both goals in the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Sunderland.

With Robin van Persie out injured, Rooney moved back to his usual spot at striker where he showed why he is the third-highest goal scorer in Premier League history.

Manchester United sit fourth on the table, just two points ahead of a surging Liverpool side. If the Red Devils want to lock up a top-four finish, they’ll need more performances like this out of their skipper.
