Wednesday’s Premier League roundup: Chelsea, Man City win; six of top seven prevail

On Wednesday seven Premier League games took place — following on from Tuesday’s three matches — in a pulsating day of action in the Premier League.

Six of the the top seven teams recorded victories, as Chelsea and Manchester City continue to duel for the title, while Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United all won as the race for the top four intensifies.

West Ham United 0-1 ChelseaRECAP

Eden Hazard‘s header was the difference for the Blues as they somehow kept out a fired up West Ham side to maintain their lead at the top of the table. Thibaut Courtois saved time and time again from Diafra Sakho, as the Hammers are now six games without a win while Jose Mourinho’s boys continue their charge towards the title with a gritty performance.

Manchester City 2-0 Leicester City RECAP

David Silva and James Milner struck at the and of each half to give the Citizens a crucial win, as they kept within touching distance of Chelsea in the title race. City struggled to get past Mark Schwarzer for vast swathes as Wilfried Bony had a night to forget, plus the Foxes came so close to equalizing through Riyad Mahrez. Another interesting note, captain Vincent Kompany was dropped to the bench.

Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 Swansea CityRECAP

Spurs went ahead through Nacer Chadli, but then a worrying moment arrived as Bafetimbi Gomis appeared to collapse on the pitch before being stretchered off. More on that, here. Ki then equalized for the Swans but Spurs surged into a second half lead as goals from Ryan Mason and Andros Townsend put them 3-1 up. However a late goal from Gylfi Sigurdsson set up a tense finish and a wonderful late stop from Hugo Lloris sealed all three points for Spurs.

Stoke City 2-0 EvertonRECAP

Stoke moved up to eighth with Victor Moses‘ terrific header and a late goal from Mame Diouf sealing the win, as Everton’s struggles continue. The Toffees are in a relegation battle, as their poor PL season could get even worse.

Newcastle United 0-1 Manchester UnitedRECAP

Newcastle should have had a penalty kick after some clumsy defending from Chris Smalling, but United snatched a late, late win in “Fergie time” as Ashley Young played the hero. A little harsh on the Magpies, but United remain in the top four after grinding out another win.

QPR 1-2 ArsenalRECAP

The Gunners took a while to break down a stubborn QPR side but Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez struck in the second half to put them 2-0 up before Charlie Austin scored a stunner to set up a nervy finish. In the end Arsenal deserved to win as Robert Green stood on his head to keep out Arsene Wenger’s side who remain in third place. As for the R’s they are still in the bottom three but have a game in hand to drag themselves out.

Liverpool 2-0 Burnley – RECAP

Goals from Jordan Henderson (another stunner) and Daniel Sturridge lead Liverpool to a comfortable win over Burnley. The Reds have now won four on the spin and are in fifth on 51 points, while Burnley are in the bottom three after a third defeat in four.
