WARNING!! Video below is graphic.

19-year-old Chievo Verona defender/winger Federico Mattiello has gone off inside 20 minutes in their Serie A match against Roma with a horrible injury many will find difficult to watch.

The injury, which was visible for all to see and caused players to immediately call for assistance, happened in the 16th minute as Mattiello went into a tackle with Radja Nainggolan. The ball had squirted out from the Chievo box and both players were chasing down the loose ball. Nainggolan was not at fault, as both players looked to snatch the 50/50 ball with a sliding tackle.

Unfortunately, Nainggolan’s leg ended up on top of Mattiello’s, and the force of the Roma midfielder’s body falling downwards towards the ground put enough pressure on Mattiello’s lower leg to cause it to essentially snap. Play immediately stopped as both teams instantly saw what happened, and Mattiello put his hands to his head while looking at the carnage.

Roma’s twitter account accurately captured the scene, as the injury was clearly visible to all right away.

The kid, a Juventus youth product, was making his first start of the season in Serie A. He had made two substitute appearances for his parent club earlier in the year, and had come off the bench just once before since moving to Chievo Verona just a month ago on loan. The match ended a disappointing 0-0 for both sides.

Mattiello was eventually stretchered off after lengthy treatment. There is no word on his condition at the moment, but it can’t be good. If you can stomach it, the video is below, but beware, it’s incredibly gruesome.

UPDATE: Juventus announced team doctor Fabrizio Tencone has traveled to Verona hospital Ospedale Negrar to determine what surgery Mattiello should undergo and develop a timetable for his recovery.
