Ronald Koeman understandably was very pleased with his side’s performance, resulting in a point gained at Stamford Bridge in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
“I think we had a fantastic reaction to the 1-0, we played great football,” Koeman explained. “I think in the first 45 minutes we had the best chances to score, but in the second half more difficulties in keeping the ball. Of course Chelsea pressed much more than they did in the first half. And you know to get a good result against Chelsea you need some luck, you need good defending, and you need a great goalkeeper and we had that today.”
When asked about goalkeeper Fraser Forster, he lit up like a Christmas tree, pouring praise all over his netminder.
“He’s one of the key players,” Koeman said. “Always the position of the goalkeeper is very important. He’s an experienced goalkeeper and a great goalkeeper, and he showed that today but he’s shown that all season.”
Forster was enormous against Chelsea, especially down the stretch when the Blues pushed for the win. With the point sending them into sixth, Koeman said that’s their goal at the end of the season. The top four may be out of reach, but European play is still very much in the crosshairs.
“We are not talking about the top four, we are talking about top six, because the top six plays European football and that would be fantastic for Southampton,” said Koeman. “We do our best, we live game-to-game. It’s very difficult because every team plays for something. Chelsea plays for the championship, we play for the highest position.”
