If Liverpool win they will go two points behind fourth placed Manchester United and set up a bitter clash with their fierce rivals at Anfield next Sunday as the intense race for the Champions League places continues.

Sidenote: in the same game last year ex-Liverpool player Jonjo Shelvey played a part in all four goals against his former team as a bizarre encounter played out in Swansea.

In team news Steven Gerrard will return for the Reds after missing seven games with injury, while Mamadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel are both fit. Swansea’s Bafetimbi Gomis has been cleared to play despite collapsing at Tottenham Hotspur two weeks ago.

What they’re saying

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers on the run-in: “We have 30 points to play for so I am guessing it will be another 23 points [to make the top four],” Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo. “That is how competitive it has been this year. We have won nine and drawn two of the last 11. It has been a great run but now we have to be focused on these last 10 matches.”

Swansea boss Garry Monk on facing Liverpool:

“They [Liverpool] are a very good side with great quality. They are the in-form team in the league and have dangerous players all over the pitch,” Monk said. “They’re pushing for the top four, but we have our own agenda. Our next target is to beat our best-ever total of 47 points, and we’ve got a great chance of doing that.”

Prediction

This promises to be a game of the highest quality between teams who love to spray the ball around. Swansea’s fans will create an intimidating atmosphere but expect Liverpool to keep rolling and set up a huge clash with Manchester United on Sunday. 2-1 to Liverpool.
