Frank Lampard has opted to use the current international break to visit his future home, New York City, for the weekend and take in a game at Yankee Stadium as New York City FC, the Major League Soccer side he’ll join in July, faces Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.
Lampard touched down in NYC Thursday evening — we know this to be true as the paparazzi were, as expected, in attendance — alongside fiancee Christine Bleakley.
During a Wednesday press conference, NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis voiced his pleasure at Lampard’s desire to visit and spend time with his future teammates, via MLSsoccer.com:
“I have not yet spoken to him about his coming over, but I’m certain we’ll get to spend some time together. It’s really exciting, obviously, that he’s going to take that time and make the effort to come over and see us this weekend when he has a break. We’ll look forward to spending some time with him and also getting him around the guys some more. I think that’s important.”
It’s been a while since Lampard featured prominently in Manchester City’s first-team plans (113 minutes played since Feb. 1), but Kreis was also quick to shoot down speculation that Lampard could join NYCFC before the summer, stating emphatically, “It’s certainly not anything that’s being discussed.”
NYCFC are expecting around 27,000 fans for Saturday’s game, following 43,507 for the club’s inaugural home game two weeks ago.
