The match-ups for Sunday should prove to be entertaining and intense, with a long-contested derby prefaced by a match with implications for both ends of the table.
Burnley vs. Tottenham Hotspur — Live on NBCSN and Live Extra, 8:30 a.m. ET
There are too vastly different forms of desperation in play at Turf Moor to kick off Sunday’s Premier League schedule. Spurs have a chance to leap into sole possession of fifth-place in the Premier League, while three points for Burnley would boost the gritty side out of the drop zone.
Burnley has just four points in its last six matches, but did defeat Manchester City two weeks ago before a 2-0 loss at Southampton. Spurs come in winners of three of four, and could really use this one for its European dreams.
Sunderland vs. Newcastle United— Live on NBCSN and Live Extra, 11 a.m. ET
They are two of the Premier League’s lesser lights this season, and one is flirting with relegation, but neither side of the Tyne-Wear Derby will need any outside motivation in a hotly-contested rivalry at the Stadium of Light (So, maybe it’s the Wear-Tyne Derby?).
Sunderland has won four-straight against the Magpies, and sits just a point above the drop zone. If Burnley wins against Spurs, Dick Advocaat’s Black Cats will enter the derby inside the relegation area. It’s a big one, and Newcastle is shaking things up to get ready.
