Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat was ecstatic after Sunderland defeated Newcastle for their fifth-straight Tyne-Wear derby victory. Jermain Defoe marked the 1-0 win with an extraordinary volley, but Sunderland dominated throughout.
“It was special. If you win the game it makes it special,” Advocaat said of the rivalry. But he knew he couldn’t do it alone. “When we arrived here [the fans] gave us a very positive feeling, and it continued during the game.”
“I think it was a well-deserved win, the way we played, the way we worked, to pressurize their midfield. We didn’t give a lot of chances away, and we have three or four chances to score a goal, so I think it was a well-deserved win.
