The Blues own a seven-point lead over Arsenal in the Premier League table, and that seems to be more than enough for Eden Hazard to work with.
Chelsea’s Player of the Season candidate has put together masterful performance after masterful performance on the field, and it’s translated into not only points but enough of a lead for him to comfortably declare his team is nearly across the finish line.
“We are confident,” Hazard said following Chelsea’s win over Stoke City on Saturday. “We are first in the league and we take game after game. We have the title in our hands. We want to bring the trophy to Stamford Bridge.”
It’s hard to argue with Hazard’s logic. Seven points in front, Chelsea have eight matches remaining to close things out. They still do have to play Manchester United, Liverpool, and most importantly Arsenal before the season is finished, but could theoretically wrap the league up with a win over the Gunners at the Emirates in late April. Mathematically it’s more likely the deal would be sealed at home in early May against either Crystal Palace or Liverpool assuming they don’t make things difficult on themselves.
The Chelsea manager says there is still plenty of work to do, but had the same optimistic tone. “Now we need five victories for the title,” said Jose Mourinho after the Stoke win.
Mourinho also spoke highly of Hazard after the Belgian scored a penalty to put Chelsea 1-0 up on Stoke. “We have confidence in him,” said the manager. “You have more confidence in some players than others and you know that when he steps up he can be trusted and is calm.”
