Cristiano Ronaldo joined some pretty esteemed company on Wednesday — try the names Raul and Alfredo Di Stefano on for size — when he scored his 46th goal of the season (all competitions) to give Real Madrid a 1-0 lead over Rayo Vallecano.

The goal (above video), which ultimately proved to be the game-winner and helps to keep an increasingly desperate Real side in the La Liga title race (four points behind leaders Barcelona), was his 300th goal for Real Madrid. Raul and Di Stefano are the only other players to reach the 300-goal mark for the club.

What’s even more amazing, Ronaldo reached 300 goals scored in just 288 games (six seasons), while the Real careers of Raul (329 goals) and Di Stefano (308) — two absolute legends, by any standard — spanned 741 and 396 games, respectively.

Wednesday’s goal comes on the back of Ronaldo’s five-goal explosion against Granada over the weekend, in which the Portuguese superstar equalled Di Stefano’s Real record of 28 hat tricks.

James Rodriguez, playing in his second game back from a broken foot, scored the game’s other goal, giving Real a late 2-0 victory. Carlo Ancelotti’s side host 14th-placed Eibar this weekend, while Barca are away to fifth-placed and Champions League-chasing Sevilla.

Elsewhere in La Liga action, Barca thrashed Almeria on Wednesday, 4-0, at the Camp Nou on the back of goals scored by Lionel Messi, Marc Bartra and Luis Suarez (two).
