MLS Snapshot: D.C. United 2-2 New York Red Bulls

The game in 100 words (or less): It’s amazing what home-field advantage means in MLS — even if the distance between two teams’ stadium is three and a half hours, which is essentially a walk down the street in MLS. Three weeks ago, the Red Bulls battered D.C. United at Red Bull Arena. Fast forward to Saturday, and United are the aggressors who find themselves moments away from three very deserved points. Perry Kitchen had himself a game, but Bill Hamid’s late howler cost United two points — not the kind of result you’d expect from a veteran-laden team like D.C.

Three moments that mattered

25′ — Kitchen rises above, heads it in — Luis Robles was poor in coming off his line, Dax McCarty was at fault for his marking of the goalscorer, but Kitchen did well to create loss his marker, get to the spot where the ball was due to arrive, rise above everyone else in the penalty area and head the ball home.

67′ — Rolfe sets Kitchen up for another — Chris Rofle did the dirty work, blazing down the left flank, cutting inside and picking out the late-arriving Kitchen 25 yards out. Kitchen had time to settle the ball, take a touch and fire low and hard to the far post, beating Luis Robles with pinpoint placement.

90′ — Hamid spills, Sam pounces — Damien Perrinelle equalized two minutes after Kitchen’s second goal, setting up Lloyd Sam’s 90th-minute equalizer. Sacha Kljestan hit the free kick well and low, bounced it right in front of Hamid, who spilled the easy scoop into the path of Sam, who pounced for the equalizer.

Man of the match: Perry Kitchen — There’s few defensive midfielders and tempo-setters in MLS that can even hold a candle to Kitchen’s body of work at age 23, but what Kitchen did in and around the penalty area on Saturday night was something we’ve not often seen from him.
