After stunning Arsenal 3-1 away from home in the last round, Monaco failed to produce a similar result as the French side fell 1-0 to Juventus in Turin in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.

An Arturo Vidal penalty kick in the 57th minute gave the Serie A leaders the upper-hand heading into the second leg in Monaco.

Juventus was the better side throughout the match, controlling the play as Massimiliano Allegri’s men get just a bit closer to completing the treble.

Juve controlled nearly 70% of possession in the first half, but failed to put any ink on the scoresheet. Their best chance came when Claudio Marchisio played a ball into the back post that found a wide open Carlos Tevez, but the striker put his volley right into the chest of Monaco’s keeper Danijel Subasic. With the run of form Tevez is currently enjoying, the Argentinian surely should have put the chance away.

Arturo Vidal wasted another good chance for Juve to get ahead, as his shot sailed over the net and the two sides headed into the break in a scoreless draw.

Vidal would atone his miss in the second half when the Chilean put Juventus ahead from the penalty spot. The hosts continued to dominate the opening parts of the second half, when Andrea Pirlo played a long ball through to Alvaro Morata. As Ricardo Carvalho tracked back for Monaco, the defender clipped ankles with Morata, who went down to earn the penalty. Vidal stepped up and buried the shot into the top left corner.

Monaco searched for that crucial away goal and nearly found an equalizer through Dimitar Berbatov. The former Manchester United striker came off the bench in the 71st minute and immediately got his head on a corner kick, deflecting the cross inches over the bar.
