Manchester City had looked by far the better side at the Etihad in the opening stages, but they were gifted an opening goal in very soft manner.
With Jesus Navas bursting down the right flank, Manchester City looked to break despite the defenders owning the numbers advantage. As Navas sent in a cross looking for Sergio Aguero alone in the box, James Collins got his foot to the cross looking to clear it away.
But the clear by Collins was mis-hit, and the ball spun awkwardly up over West Ham goalkeeper Adrian, off the crossbar, and down into the goal mouth. The ball had already crossed the line, but it spun back up and rippled the top of the net to put away any need for goal line technology to make the decision.
Manchester City have been clearly the better side throughout the first half, and despite the awkward nature of the opener, they deserved every bit of the lead. Sergio Aguero has since made it 2-0 as the teams edge towards halftime, with West Ham proving sloppy on the ball.
