Tottenham continues its hunt for a European place next season as they travel to Newcastle, live from St. James’ Park on CNBC at 11am ET or live online at NBC Sports Live Extra.
They’ll be without Hugo Lloris for another match after his knee injury, but otherwise remain at relatively full strength. Spurs sit a healthy seven points above Swansea in seventh, but in order to ensure a European place next season – pending the FA Cup results – they potentially would need to secure sixth place, currently just two points away.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are wallowing in 14th, and while there’s no immediate danger of the drop, they still sit five points off the magical 40 mark, and are just seven points above the relegation zone. They’ve dropped five in a row and six of their last seven, with just a 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Aston Villa during that span.
In addition to missing their captain and goalkeeper, Tottenham are also without Kyle Walker, who could not make a late push into the squad as he recovers from a foot injury. Jan Vertonghen is available and in the startling lineup, however, after recovering fully from an illness.
For the Magpies, manager John Carver receives a major boost as Fabricio Coloccini returns from his red card suspension and starts along the back line, are Moussa Sissokho and Papiss Cisse are still suspended for their own recent incidents. Siem de Jong was thought to be in the mix for a return from a collapsed lung he suffered in August, but he is not among the squad. Yoan Gouffran returns to the startling lineup for his 30th league appearance after coming off the bench in last week’s loss to Liverpool.
