Wolfsburg, already down 4-1, will be without De Bruyne and Schurrle for Europa League 2nd leg vs Napoli

The dream comeback for Wolfsburg in the Europa League has just gotten a whole lot more difficult as both Kevin de Bruyne and Andre Schurrle will miss the second leg, the club confirmed.

The German side has decimated all competition since the turn of the new year, with just a single club loss across all competitions in the 2015 calendar year, until they were throttled by Napoli 4-1 in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal matchup on Thursday.

De Bruyne has been the catalyst for most of Wolfsburg’s thunderous attacks this season, and he is having an outstanding year in Germany after moving from Chelsea. He, along with former Blues teammate Schurrle, has Wolfsburg firmly in second position in the Bundesliga table to place the club in the Champions League next year.

But those two will not make the trip to Naples for the second leg, which will played on Thursday. The club confirmed De Bruyne misses out with a foot contusion while Schurrle is sidelined by a shoulder problem. They are both questionable for the team’s league match against Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday.

Both men played in the 1-1 draw with Schalke on Sunday, with De Bruyne playing the full 90 minutes and scoring, while Schurrle was removed in the 81st minute. The Europa League game will mark the first Wolfsburg match in any competition that De Bruyne has missed this season. He’s started every single one of the 44 matches Wolfsburg has played this year, finding himself on the pitch for a remarkable 3,957 of a possible 3,990 minutes this year.
