Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Luis Suarez combined for five goals and five assists as Barcelona torched Getafe 6-0 and opened up a five-point lead at the top of the La Liga table with four games to play.
All six goals came within the first 47 minutes before Barcelona shut things down as the attack starred. Messi opened things up in under 10 minutes with a beautiful Panenka penalty, and Getafe held out for another 15 minutes before the floodgates truly opened.
Suarez, Neymar, and Xavi all scored in a span of five minutes concluding at the half-hour mark, and there was no way back for the visitors at the Camp Nou. When the final whistle eventually ended the slaughter, Messi had a brace and an assist, Suarez had a pair of goals and two more assists, and Neymar had one of each. Xavi also had himself a score and a helper in the effort.
Overall, Barcelona owned a whopping 77% of possession and collected 21 shots at the Getafe net, 12 of them on target, while the visitors had just seven efforts, three on net. Most telling of all, Barcelona collected 696 successful passes to Getafe’s meager 211, not exactly a shocking number given Barcelona’s style but still a stark contrast.
The Catalans now own a five-point lead over Real Madrid, although the Whites do have a game in hand and play Almeria at home tomorrow. Barcelona also now owns a nine-goal differential advantage.
