Bad news has arrived from Belgium on Wednesday as Gregory Mertens’ condition has worsened in hospital.
The 24-year-old defender suffered heart failure after collapsing just 15 minutes into a reserve game against Genk on Monday for his club Lokeren.
Mertens has been kept in a coma by doctors since and it is believed that the condition of the Belgian top flight player has deteriorated in the past 24 hours.
The latest update comes from Lokeren’s team doctor Kris Peeters, who told VTM network that “a few problems arose” during operations on Mertens on Tuesday and that: “We only know they are doing their utmost to turn things around. But we all heard things are not going well.”
Lokeren confirmed that Mertens, a former Belgian U-21 international, had undergone plenty of medical tests throughout his career and nothing pointed towards a heart condition.
As he lays in a hospital bed in Belgium fighting for his life plenty of soccer stars across the world, including many of the superstars from Belgium’s national team, have sent their support to Mertens with the message: “Blijven vechten Gregory.”
That translates to “Keep fighting, Gregory.”
