Luis Suarez wins. He won the Golden Boot with Liverpool, and he’s winning in his first year at Barcelona. But yesterday, he won at life.
A beautiful video has surfaced on YouTube of Suarez surprising a cancer patient at the Perez Scremini Foundation, a clinic in Monteviedo, Uruguay. Suarez, who is heavily involved with the Foundation through appearances and donations, gave his best gift yet.
Mateo, believing he was video conferencing with a Spanish doctor in what has become routine for him two years after being diagnosed with cancer, got the surprise of a lifetime. Suarez turns on his video chat and Mateo immediately loses the ability to speak, overwhelmed with emotion and brought to tears.
And Luis doesn’t stop there. The Uruguayan superstar gives Mateo some outstanding encouragement, calling him “brave” and “a champion” and tells him that if he continues to be good to the doctors, Suarez promises to personally deliver him a Suarez Barcelona shirt.
Suarez has plenty of fans in the world, and plenty of those who dislike him as well. But no matter your opinion on the player, this is just as touching of a moment. Hats off to Luis Suarez today, and Mateo as well. Get well soon, buddy!
