Mourinho hails “my dear enemy” Gerrard, says he tried to sign him three times

Steven Gerrard in Chelsea blue or Real Madrid white? Surely not, but Jose Mourinho says he thrice tried to bring the Liverpool man to his side.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s visit to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Mourinho spoke of his great admiration for Gerrard.

The Reds midfielder is off to Major League Soccer this season and, short of a loan move, the two will not square off again in soccer.

At least not until Gerrard is a manager himself.

From the BBC:

“My dear enemy, he has made me a better manager because to stop him has been very difficult,” Mourinho said, adding that he tried to sign him three times.

“I am very sad this is the last time I will face him.”

“It’s too late to sign him. He can’t play against Liverpool. He’s done an amazing career with his people. He refused to play in other big clubs, other big leagues, to play only for Liverpool and this is a feeling that stays together.

“Who knows if I’ll play against Steven as a Liverpool manager some day?”

Chelsea has wrapped up the Premier League title, while Liverpool needs a win to keep its slim hopes of catching No.4 Manchester United alive.
