Tragedy strikes Belgian soccer again as another young player dies of cardiac arrest

In what can only be described as an awful and tragic coincidence, another young Belgian pro player has died after suffering a heart issue on the match day pitch.

Tim Nicot, a 23-year-old left back in Belgium’s fourth tier, collapsed on the pitch while playing in a tournament for Wilrijk-Beerschot when he went into cardiac arrest. He was placed into an induced coma, and later died.

Nicot joins Gregory Mertens as young players who’ve died as a result of heart incidents during matches in Belgium in the past month.

From the BBC:

A club statement said Nicot “fought like a bear” and was the “idol of our supporters”.

It described him as “always in a good mood, always making time for an umpteenth selfie with a fan”.

Nicot’s team-mate Wesley Snoeys said: “So many questions. Always the same question comes up: why why why? You left us far too soon. I will never forget you. Forever in my heart.”

Jef Snyders, another Wilrijk-Beerschot player, added: “Football will never be the same anymore. Rest in peace mate.”
