Didier Drogba will play his last match for Chelsea today

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba was an important part of the title-winning squad this year, and while his goal tally may not reflect that, his winners medal certainly does. Unfortunately, Jose Mourinho will have to look elsewhere to fill his backup striker spot.

Drogba announced that today’s Premier League season finale against Sunderland at Stamford Bridge will be his final in a Chelsea shirt as he looks for another club to extend his storied career.

Mourinho convinced Drogba to return to Stamford Bridge this season on a one-year contract, much to the delight of Blues fans to see their hero return. He tacked on to his massive appearance total, and should he play today, it would be his 381st appearance for the club in all competitions, just outside the top 10 list of all-time appearances for Chelsea. He has 27 appearances this season so far, and while he has just four goals, his work rate was commendable and he filled in for Didier Drogba as needed for Mourinho among a squad full of proven goalscorers who can help pick up the slack.

Unfortunately for Drogba, just seven of his 27 appearances were starts, and he’s looking for more. At 37 years old, the retired Ivorian international will look for another club at the end of the year, he confirmed.

“I want to play for at least one more season and in order to play more football I feel I need to go to another club,” Drogba said to the official club website. “All the fans know my love for Chelsea and I hope to be back here in the future in another role.”

With playing experience in countries like Turkey and China, Drogba could land anywhere with anyone who deems him useful.
