MLS Snapshot: Houston Dynamo 4-2 New York Red Bulls

The game in 100 words (or less): The Houston Dynamo said it best: Viernes de Futbol gets weird sometimes. A total of eight goals were scored, though only six actually counted in the Dynamo’s 4-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Friday night. Phantom “fouls” negated the pair of goals with the game 1-0 in favor of New York, and level at 1-1. See Brad Davis over there, looking confused? He doesn’t know what happened, either. Bradley Wright-Phillips had a goal-bound shot cleared off the line inside the first 10 minutes. The Red Bulls suddenly forget how to defend in transition. The Dynamo weren’t particularly sharp in that aspect either. Neither team was particularly bad, but the big breaks all fell the way of the home side.

Three moments that mattered

42′ — Grella beats Deric at his near post — Mike Grella absolutely abused Raul Rodriguez inside the Dynamo penalty area. First he went inside, then back outside, where his tight-angled shot beat Tyler Deric at his near post for the 1-0 lead.

59′ — Boniek scores the Looping Goal of the Season — Boniek Garcia knows he got lucky. We know this because his celebration was as halfhearted and “ah, shucks” as goal celebrations come. His shot took a massive deflection, loops 15 feet into the air, over Luis Robles and just under the crossbar. 1-1, thanks to a bit of luck.

72′ — Clark hammers home from close range — Ricardo Clark had a perfectly good goal ruled out just minutes earlier, for…we’re still trying to figure that out, actually. Garcia’s corner kick made its way to Clark all the way at the far post, where his first-time volley blazed past Robles and found the back of the net.

Man of the match: Boniek Garcia — The goal was, as already stated, extremely lucky, but Garcia’s dominant second-half performance was anything but luck. Poor Kemar Lawrence, he’ll be seeing Boniek in his sleep for a week.
