Following their 2-0 win over Ecuador in the opening game of the tournament lastย Thursday, Chile has the chance to potentially book its spot in the quarterfinals by beating CONCACAF invitees Mexico in Santiago Arturo Vidal scored the opener from the penalty spot in that match, while Arsenalโs Alexis Sanchez set up Eduardo Vargas for the second to seal the win in front of jubilant home supports. Mexico will have to overcome a hostile atmosphere in Santiago to keep their Copa America dreams alive.
With the likes of Vidal and Sanchez Jorge Sampaoliโs Chileย will fancy their chances โ despite being without suspended Matias Fernandez who saw red in the opener โ against a weakened El Tri outfit but Miguel Herreraโs menย will look to grindย out at least another point following their 0-0 draw with Bolivia last Friday to set up a showdown with Ecuador in their final Group A match.
Speaking of Ecuador, they face Bolivia on Monday with La Tricolor knowing a defeat combined withย a win for Mexicoย would see them eliminated and their dreadful form in the Copa America continue.
Ecuador vs. Bolivia โ 5 p.m. ET โ FOLLOW LIVE
Including the 2015 competition, Ecuador have only gained one point in their last four Copa America tournaments but playingย the lowest-ranked team in the competition, Bolivia, will surely yield points. Ecuador gave a spirited showing against hosts Chile in the opener but came up short with the penalty Vidal won for the opener hugely questionable. As for Bolivia, they held Mexico to a 0-0 draw and if they can pick up a win against Ecuador then this tournament of shocks could well continue and see a minnow advance to the knockout stages.
With Venezuela shocking Colombia in a 1-0 win on Sunday and Argentina coughing up two late goals to draw 2-2 with Paraguay on Saturday, this tournament is living up to its reputation as being extremely unpredictable.
