Perennial rumor-monger Edin Dzeko is likely to stay at Manchester City for the foreseeable future after his agent squashed any chance of him leaving this summer.
It’s often difficult to trust an agent’s word, particularly when they have ulterior motives underlying much of what they say, but nonetheless Irfan Redzepagic has spoken out for his 29-year-old client.
“Every day he’s linked with another club. First Atletico Madrid, then Roma and now Chelsea,” Redzepagic told Bosnian newspaper Nezavisne. “These are just journalistic speculation which are repeated each transfer window. I’m bored of repeating that these stories are not true. Edin is on vacation. He hasn’t rejected any offers because there hasn’t been any offers. The chances of him leaving are zero.”
Last summer rumors were abound of an exit because he was prolific in scoring despite mostly coming off the bench, with one of the best minutes-per-goal ratio in the Premier League. This past year, however, Dzeko took a serious step backwards, scoring just four goals in 22 Premier League appearances as Manchester City failed to seriously challenge Chelsea for the title. Of those 22 appearances, Dzeko started just half of them, logging a paltry 932 minutes all season, or about 42 minutes per appearance. He completed a full 90 minutes just twice.
“Many things influenced his performances last season, like the two injuries he had, but he has no reason to be unhappy at the club he has won four trophies with,” Redzepagic said. “So the chances of him leaving are almost none.”
However, with three years left on his contract at the Etihad, Dzeko is under club control and it would seem fewer clubs are interested in prying him away than reported. His agent even joked, “When you read the media, it looks like all clubs want Dzeko! I’ve also heard some of Bosnian league teams are after him!”
