MLS Snapshot: New York Red Bulls 1-2 Vancouver Whitecaps (video)

The game in 100 words (or less): Sometimes a game is just over after 15 minutes. Other times, you have a pretty good idea what the rest of the 90 minutes has in store after just five or 10 minutes. The Vancouver Whitecaps’ 2-1 road victory over the New York Red Bulls was a perfect example of this, as the Red Bulls completed the rare missed penalty/red card/goal conceded trifecta inside the game’s first 15 minutes. The Whitecaps weren’t particularly dominant or even impressive — road teams in MLS rarely are — but David Ousted’s two penalty kick saves against Bradley Wright-Phillips (the first player in MLS history to miss two in one game) were worth close to all three points by themselves.

Three moments that mattered

5′ & 65′ — Ousted makes the easy PK save on BWP — Not only was Wright-Phillips’ 5th-minute penalty easily saved because of how poorly it was placed laterally, but it was also waist-high for 6-foot-4 Ousted to make the easy save. Somehow, his spot-kick effort in the 65th was, dare I say, worse.

11′ — Kljestan earns himself an ugly red card — First it was an elbow to the chest/throat of Kendall Waston, followed by a sweeping of the leg to take the big Costa Rican down that earned Sacha Kljestan the red card and early shower he so obviously wanted.

15′ — Manneh finishes the cross for the opener — Steven Beitashour made the overlapping run down the right flank, where he then delivered the inch-perfect cross to the top of the six-yard box, where Kekuta Manneh used any and every part of his body to bundle the ball over the line.

Man of the match: David Ousted — Two penalties saved, as mentioned, but also a huge diving save just moments after the lead cut in half late on. Even down a man for 80 minutes, the Red Bulls looked good value for a point, but the big Danish ‘keeper was having none of it.
